Diagnostic Accuracy of the Daye Diagnostic Tampon Compared to Clinician-Collected and Self-Collected Vaginal Swabs for Detecting HPV

The STAMP diagnostic accuracy trial (n=260) found that the Daye Diagnostic Tampon detects high-risk HPV with 82.9% sensitivity and 91.6% specificity, performing comparably to clinician-collected swabs and outperforming vaginal self-swabs in conclusive result rate (tampon 99.2% vs VSS 95.4% vs CCS 90.8%). Invalid results were lowest with the tampon, and concordance with clinician swabs was high (p=0.845). The study concludes the tampon is a reliable alternative for HPV self-sampling.

Acceptability of Diagnostic Tampon Self-Sampling for HPV: Mixed-Methods Findings from the STAMP Trial and Focus Groups

This mixed-methods study (n=263 + 24 focus-group participants) shows tampon self-sampling is highly acceptable, with participants consistently describing it as more comfortable, private, and psychologically easier than clinician sampling. Themes included familiarity (“an everyday product”), demedicalisation of screening, and improved confidence with clear instructions. Many participants preferred tampon self-collection over vaginal swabs and speculum exams.

Advancing Cervical Cancer Prevention Equity: Innovations in Self-Sampling and Digital Health Technologies Across Healthcare Settings

The paper emphasises improved comfort, reduced embarrassment, and greater autonomy as mechanisms to reduce health inequalities, and positions tampons as an evolution beyond swab-based self-sampling in HPV programmes.

Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause: Evaluation of Symptoms, Using a Questionnaire, Before and After Treatment

Journal of Reproductive Health, 2024

In a cohort of 60 women (20 controls, 40 with GSM), the study assessed GSM symptoms before and after treatment using the DIVA questionnaire, with tampons included as one of the diagnostic interventions. Across all participants, tampons were the most preferred method compared with a speculum exam and clinician-collected smear. The study concludes that tampon-based sampling is both feasible and strongly preferred for GSM evaluation.
